Searching for the Fox Den

On any bright October morning,

you can walk the woods along Reynard’s Lair

and then continue north on Far Away

to search for that mythical fox den

the old duffer claimed, now decades ago,

was hidden somewhere among rocks, though no one’s

ever found it. But finding was never really

the point. The trails may confide something else—

a last crane fly landing on a scarlet maple leaf

or the smudge of a black bear vanishing

amid hemlock shadows or ferns turned russet.
